Position Summary:

The NextGen Experience and Direct-to-Consumer group leads the strategy and development of the NBA’s global over-the-top product offerings and services! The League's products and services reach fans in 215 markets around the world. The content is offered in multiple languages and through a collection of packages including micro-transactions, giving fans the ability to purchase portions of a live game!


NextGen will be a multi-platform experience that connects NBA fans to free and premium content while showcasing product innovation. We are improving our digital platform to grow the frequency and duration of engagement through innovation on the game viewing experience, advanced machine learning-enabled personalization, community features, emerging technologies, and new revenue opportunities for the global NBA fan. Our goal is to help fans consume tailored content while discovering all components of NBA fandom including merchandise and fantasy.


Your primary responsibility will be to lead project and program management of the new NBA NextGen experience across web, mobile and connected devices. The ideal candidate should have experience running multiple digital product launches and development initiatives for large-scale sports, entertainment, or subscription products. The outcomes-focused NextGen project requires a candidate who can craft an outstanding lean/agile product development culture and help grow and lead a team of Project Managers and Scrum Masters long term who emphasize organization, accountability, flexibility, and outcomes-focused measures of success. Being able to align efforts across Content, Marketing, Product, Engineering, Global Partnerships, Finance and Strategy, while demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills, is a key requirement. You focus on details, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and rapidly synthesize new information in order to set priorities. You assess issues, mitigate risks, and create detailed plans that emphasize measurable progress through each lifecycle of product development.

Major Responsibility:

Project Management:

  • Support the Head of Product by leading project planning, prioritization, communication, and issue and risk management
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans for product and platform development workstreams, as well as key initiatives across the organization needed for the overall NextGen initiative
  • Work in partnership with leadership to set success criteria and critical metrics for each phase of development, and communicate appropriate and timely progress updates against strategic objectives
  • Support the organization of key requirements into epics, user stories, and acceptance criteria, using agile/lean methodologies
  • Analyze detailed product and technical plans, identify soft spots in product development timelines and implement risk mitigation plans Set lean/agile software development standards, and partner closely with individual scrum teams/squads, product leads, and technical project managers to enforce them

Communication and Process/Operations:

  • Demonstrate clear, concise, effective verbal and written communications
  • Lead the creation of project and product updates for all levels of the organization, including executive leadership, based on a deep and continuously evolving understanding of the NBA's business and NextGen objectives
  • Provide clear direction on priorities and trade-offs, working closely with NextGen Business, Product. Platform and Data/Analytics leadership to ensure transparency, ownership and timely resolution of issues and risks
  • Organize and lead key discovery sessions and updates with internal departments for development of the NextGen Experience platform
  • Help establish and maintain key processes (e.g. change management, risk management, issue management, resource management) to ensure alignment with the organization's existing processes and industry-standard methodologies
  • Maintain and organize budgets, SOWs, and detailed plans for third-party partners across business, design, and development functions

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • 7+ years of combined project management experience, AND Agile or SAFe certification(s)
  • Deep expertise with lean/agile digital product and software development methodologies, with 3+ years of experience leading teams
  • Demonstrated expertise coordinating large-scale product and/or platform launches
  • Experience working with premium digital and sports subscription products/services using AVOD, TVOD or SVOD business model(s)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to understand and express complex topics
  • Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated ability to drive projects using data to influence product development
  • Effective relationship-building across functional teams, department leadership, senior partners, and executives, including engineering leadership and non-technical leads
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to lead multiple sub-projects at once
  • Experienced proficiency in modern project management tools and standard methodologies, such as Agile/CSM, Lean, gitHub, Atlassian (JIRA, Confluence), MS Project, or similar planning tools
  • Agile software development and project management certification such as SAFe, PMI, PMP or PgMP preferred
  • Knowledge of basketball and a passion for the NBA and sports


Bachelor's degree in related field required
