Head of Technology & Infrastructure Operations

Position Summary: 

 

Leading the NBA’s technology operations department, the Head of Tech & Infra Ops is a results-oriented executive with demonstrated experience in technology strategy and delivery, who works closely with senior business executives and technology leaders to balance technology needs with the NBA’s strategic business & growth goals. Reporting to the CTO, this executive will be responsible for leading and growing a team of professionals focused on designing, deploying, and maintaining a global technology footprint across cloud providers, league data centers, team venues, and regional office locations.

 

We are seeking a leader who will be an integral part of this journey by setting technical goals and objectives, developing and executing cloud and infrastructure strategic plans, recommending/prioritizing investments to ensure system performance and availability while mitigating risks, and embracing our departmental mission: Drive innovation through technology to empower our colleagues, delight our fans and safeguard our brand.  The ideal candidate will be a seasoned senior technology executive who is competent and comfortable around business plans as well as technology roadmaps – to understand and anticipate user needs and be responsive and proactive in assessing new technologies/products and their impact to the NBA’s global business model. This person must be grounded in operational management prowess with respect to budgets, teams/headcount and interactions with senior management.

 

This role is strategic, creative, analytical, and for the ideal candidate, hands-on. There should be a player-coach mind-set; an in-the-trenches style and a fearless willingness to roll up the sleeves – diving into technical details when necessary. Bringing contemporary ideas and technology to the company is mandatory; creating and setting industry standards, while constantly raising the bar internally is ideal. This will be a creative individual who is excited about inventing the future with us while selecting the technology and solutions that will drive game-changing innovation.

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for the analysis, design, planning, implementation, and maintenance of all facets of NBA’s Technology & Infrastructure Operations including the Messaging, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, NetOps and DBOps teams.
  • Oversee, mentor, and grow an existing team; lead investment case(s) for strategic development of mission-critical systems and scale the organization to support the NBA’s increasing technology footprint.
  • Drive the continuous evolution of the NBA’s cloud strategy and vision, while transforming teams to meet emerging demands.
  • Work in conjunction with the CISO, software development executives, Media/Broadcast team and Technology leaders across the NBA’s various leagues and teams to ensure all systems are implemented and maintained with a security mindset.
  • Own business continuity and disaster recovery plans within the Technology department – including making a case for new investments in technology infrastructure to mitigate risks and minimize operational impact of “black swan” events.
  • Ensure alignment across infrastructure, operations, development and security teams by fostering a cohesive and collaborative environment pushing toward common goals.
  • Experience with successfully implementing cloud-based solutions utilizing an Agile/DevOps approach and Cloud Adoption Frameworks.
  • Establish operational and capital budgets in order to address the needs of various areas of the department: systems infrastructure, security, networks, and databases, hardware replenishment etc. 
  • Provide leadership and guidance regarding technology strategy, operational process enhancements, cost-optimization, and efficiency improvements.
  • Responsible for Computing, Messaging and Collaboration infrastructure across the NBA – including Windows/MacOS computing, Mail/Messaging (Microsoft Exchange, Slack, Teams etc.) and Collaboration (Zoom, WebEx, Cisco Call Manager, Jabber, etc.) systems.
  • Accountable for effectively running infrastructure and operations services including performance, stability, and availability; Play a lead partner role with technology leaders and other senior executives to ensure integrity and confidentiality of the NBA’s information and assets.
  • Establish metrics, key performance indicators and service level agreements for driving up the performance of IT infrastructure and cloud services delivery.
  • Own a comprehensive operational incident response plan that encompasses all of the systems, servers, applications and networks managed by the NBA.
  • Partner with stakeholders across business, technology, NBA/WNBA/G-League/2KL teams and vendors to develop infrastructure and operational strategies that enable growth across league brands and properties.
  • Manage and continuously look to enhance the NBA’s state of the art High Speed Arena Network (HSAN) – a geographically redundant high-speed network that connects all arenas back to our data center.
  • Implement a regular penetration testing regimen in partnership with the CISO and other senior technology leaders. Review success metrics periodically and promptly address identified system vulnerabilities.
  • Knowledgeable in information security, audit requirements (e.g., PCI, SOC), cloud security technologies, platforms, and implementations Remediate periodic risk assessment findings to support information security and third-party audits.
  • Ensure that team is engaged in both the team and wider company strategy, goals and purpose – through regular communication and meetings/events that keep staff informed and invested in our objectives.
  • Be a trusted thought partner and sounding board for CTO, advising on technology strategy, projects and goals – including leading prioritization discussions when faced with competing organizational demands.

 

Background/Experience:

 

Technical:

  • Experience with messaging and unified communication technologies including Microsoft Exchange, Proofpoint’s Secure Email Gateway, Slack, Zoom, Cisco Telephony/Jabber etc.
  • Possess a solid foundation of computer networking architectures and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, VPN proxy services, IPv4, IPv6, QoS, Multicast, MPLS, IP Routing Protocols like ISIS, OSPF, BGP, LAN, WAN, WLAN, Mobility wireless and WWAN design and implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
  • Thought leader and innovator in cloud technologies, including multi-cloud strategies and multi-CDN strategies that set us up for rapid scalability and business continuity. Hands-on experience implementing and maintaining hybrid cloud architecture.
  • Exposure to load balancing technologies Citrix NetScaler, F5, AWS elastic load balancer, and Azure Application Gateways
  • Microsoft technology stack including Active Directory, Azure Active Directory, Azure DevOps, Azure, SharePoint online, and OneDrive.
  • Hypervisor and virtualization technologies including VMWare vSphere; SAN and NAS storage including Isilon and EMC VNX
  • Proficiency with the implementation and support of automated system monitoring tools including New Relic, Check MK, and other cloud-based tooling.
  • Experience with immutable backup systems such as Rubrik or Veem.
  • Datacenter knowledge inclusive of design, redundancy, and build outs; experience with NOCs supporting Broadcast/Media operations would be ideal.
  • Exposure to video encoding/transcoding, VCMS and streaming platforms.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Azure and/or AWS including Compute (virtual machines, serverless computing functions, auto scaling, API gateways), Storage (S3, EBS, Storage Accounts etc.), Networking/Content Delivery (VPC, ELB, API Gateway, etc.), and Identity Access Management (IAM policies and roles etc.) 
  • Experience with automation/configuration management via Provisioning tools (AWS CloudFormation, Terraform), Deployment management and automation tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible), and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • In depth knowledge of relational and NoSQL database platforms Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL database, MySQL, MongoDB, SAP HANA, and AWS’ RDS
  • Experience/awareness on frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL, and ISO 27001/27002; understanding of relevant legal and regulatory requirements like Payment Card Industry/Data Security Standard, GDPR, etc.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse shareholders and other C-level experts within the company.
  • Ability to communicate and message non-technical executives around the technology needs and situations in the Organizations as well as informing what is current and culturally consistent in the marketplace.
  • Strong influence management skills and ability to gain confidence and trust from clients.
  • Outstanding analytical skills, the ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines, as well as the ability to work well in a demanding, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to structure analysis and drive strategic answers to address novel and ambiguous issues.
  • Must have direct P&L and budgeting experience in a development environment with a demonstrated track record of expertly managing costs and deliverables without sacrificing quality.
  • Develop and sustain a professional organization by hiring, retaining, developing, empowering, and motivating the infrastructure and operations team.

 

Educational Background Required:

  • 15+ years of experience in the field or a related area - including progression into recent roles as a technology operations executive
  • Degree in Computer Science, Informatoin Systems or Engineering
