Head of Product, Next Gen Experience

As a global sports and media business, the NBA is so much more. While Basketball Operations runs the league’s on-court activities, other departments manage relationships with television and digital media partners, develop marketing partnerships with some of the world’s most recognizable companies, oversee the licensing of NBA merchandise, and handle a wide range of responsibilities that drive the NBA’s success.

Position Summary:

Next Gen Experience Group leads the strategy for the NBA’s global over-the-top product offerings and services. The offerings and services reach fans in 215 countries and territories around the world by delivering live games and original programming on almost any device. The content is offered in multiple languages and through a collection of packages including micro-transactions, giving fans the ability to purchase portions of a live game.

In order to elevate the fan experience, the Next Gen Experience Group is improving their digital platform with the goal of growing the frequency and duration of engagement, improving the game viewing experience and providing flexibility and customizations to meet the needs of the global NBA fan. The platform will power new experiences across devices allowing fans to consume personalized content while also having frictionless access to all components of NBA fandom including merchandise and fantasy!

The primary responsibilities are to lead the strategy and development of the new Next Gen Experience, across web, mobile and connected devices that allows NBA fans to consume a wide variety of free and premium content. The ideal candidate should have experience launching a large-scale sports, entertainment, or subscription product including leading the research, user journey creation, design and development phases. The ambitious project will require the candidate to recruit a new dedicated team that works dynamically within the organization to align efforts across Content, Marketing, Product, Engineering, Global Partnerships, Finance and Strategy. The candidate should possess both technical skills and business insight while exhibiting strong mentorship ability.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a strategic leader with vision for the NBA’s Direct-to-Consumer business
  • Build the vision (and feature set) of the ideal NBA personalized digital experience, Next Gen, for a global fan that is centered around innovating the live game experience while driving frequent engagement with all types of NBA content.
  • Recruit and develop a team across key functional areas including product management, project management, design, research etc.
  • Develop and maintain roadmap for new Next Gen Experience across all platforms while providing direction on priorities and trade-offs
  • Communicate with leadership to share project status, and to call out risks as needed to ensure clarity, ownership, and timely resolution
  • Develop process and system to gather/conduct research (quantitative and qualitative), use existing user engagement data, test features and generate requirements for engineering teams
  • Identify potential timeline soft spots and develop risk mitigation techniques to minimize issues
  • Understand marketplace trends, competitive offerings, new products/technologies and consumer behavior to spot opportunities to improve the NBA offering
  • Partner closely with broader Product, Content and Marketing organizations to ensure new platform maintains key existing features but also provides flexibility for future needs and innovation
  • Define a new ecosystem where NBA partners in ticketing, merchandise and fantasy/gaming are deeply integrated for superior user experiences
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with companies, agencies, or partners that can provide key advantages

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience

  • 15+ years in digital product development or digital project management with consistent track record of successful launches and delivery
  • 5+ years working with premium subscription products/services using AVOD, TVOD or SVOD business model(s)
  • Experience with multiple product development methodologies and cross-functional project management skills
  • Previous hiring and management experience of high performing teams comprised of internal and external resources
  • Experience with preparing and running an annual budget
  • Experience communicating (written and presentation) to senior level executives
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to run multiple sub-projects at once
  • Extensive technical experience working with app technologies, video streaming, subscription systems and platform integrations
  • Technical competence and ability to adapt to new technologies and lead teams through these changes
  • Knowledge of basketball and a passion for the NBA and sports

Educational Background Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required
