Head of Design, Next Gen Experience

Position Summary

The NBA has a unique opportunity for a seasoned experience design leader to join the product team. There are two focus areas for this role: first is to help set the vision for the next generation NBA streaming product and service ecosystem; the second is to grow, lead and develop their in-house experience design capability.


The Next Gen Experience Group will own driving the vision and user experience for the NBA's global apps, websites and premium subscription service (League Pass). League Pass is available in over 220 countries today and is distributed across multiple platforms. The Next Gen Experience team has been chartered to reimagine the game telecast to maximize fan engagement and create an integrated, personalized, global digital platform that integrates NBA products and services into a seamless fan experience. 


The Next Gen Experience Group will ensure that every digital touchpoint provides a seamless, world-class experience that delights and engages our fans. As a design expert, you will work with product and engineering to set a portfolio vision, develop the roadmap, and help resource and prioritize efforts. You will influence the product and service ecosystem strategy by leveraging your expertise in qualitative research to understand fan behaviors and needs; you will envision and test opportunities through low and high fidelity designs and prototypes. You will socialize and evangelize the vision through variety of communication techniques to leadership, internal cross-functional partners and external partners. You will partner closely with engineering teams to help realize the design vision and iterate on the design by engaging users to validate and enhance the experience.


When it comes to team, we are looking for a hands-on, impact-driven creative leader to set an organizational vision then grow and develop a team of talented designers, producers and design managers within the NBA Product org. In this role, you will shape a culture that enables creativity, cross-functional collaboration, open feedback, and design excellence across the organization. As a people manager, you will mentor and support design managers and all contributors to hone their craft and help develop their career goals. You will seek to create operational efficiencies for execution, effective collaboration and high-quality design outcomes.

You are familiar with a range of design research methodologies and tools and are able to create frameworks to communicate insights to cross-functional teams.

Major Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Head of Product and stakeholders to set the vision for the cross-platform services ecosystem
  • Transform broad business, technical, and customer needs into a well defined set of problems to solve and goals to achieve.
  • Set the vision for the design organization and growth plan, building an agile team of full-time, freelance and agency partners.
  • Lead experience design for the Next Gen Experience deploying user research and design methodologies to uncover user needs, envision concepts and evaluate solutions.
  • High level planning to determine what activities, deliverables, and number of iterations are required to balance quality and speed of delivery
  • Collaborate with developers, product owners, marketing, and content managers to define product experience and champion the user
  • Lead and direct world class UX and visual designers working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Take on ownership for designing and developing internal delivery processes and tools to help the entire practice become more effective. Drive and document design standards and patterns across products
  • Engage in regular project reviews and critiques to ensure that the solutions being delivered are at the highest quality and aligned with the brand strategy.
  • Demonstrable understanding of responsive design, mobile interfaces, OTT platforms, and UX design
  • Able to balance business requirements, marketing and analytics with design aesthetic
  • Be both designer and design lead working across your team internally and externally to set vision and provide consistent creative direction and oversight.
  • Be a vibrant and engaging communicator that can present concepts and ideas to all levels of the company
  • Lead research initiatives to validate approach and methodology (including, but not limited to interviews, usability testing, surveys, and A/B tests).
  • Act as "go to" with in-depth knowledge of user interface best practices and standards; research and share industry trends, competitors, and comparable experiences

Job Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience designing for any or all of the following: highly trafficked content-driven websites and/or native apps, subscription services with a focus on conversion or large scale video-centric experiences across multiple devices
  • At least 3 years demonstrated experience managing a medium sized creative organization (10+), including setting an organizational vision, structure and culture. Prior experience managing teams as part of an internal design practice including: hiring and developing talent; developing processes and tools to ensure design quality; as well as measuring success in terms of human and business impact.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and an ability to prioritize and organize to meet tasks and deadlines 
  • Knowledge of experience design best practices with the ability to take ideas from wireframes through to well executed visual designs with supporting documentation
  • Ability to craft design strategy, customer models (personas / journey maps / user research synthesis), and technical understanding of the constraints of multiple platforms; illustrate with case studies
  • Delivered designs intended for a consumer market with significant business and technical complexity. Underlying awareness for an international consumer base.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the publishing, tech and social media landscape
  • Knowledge about trends and innovations in experience design, technology, development, visual design, art, communications design and product design
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, Invision, Principle, or equivalent technologies
  • Experience sketching, concept creation and wireframing, producing sitemaps and user flows, with tappable/clickable prototypes
  • Experience bringing designs to life through animation
  • Knowledge all various platforms human interface guidelines: iOS, Android, and OTT platforms
  • Agency experience is also a plus


  • BA/BS in relevant field or equivalent experience
