Position Summary:
The Event and Clinical Operations Physician Lead is responsible for helping to lead the league's comprehensive event medical operations across all 5 leagues—NBA, WNBA, G League, BAL, and NBA 2K, and for helping to lead concierge care services. This pivotal role develops and implements event health and safety policies and protocols, establishes networks of medical providers and healthcare partners globally, and arranges for expedited medical care when needed. This role will involve a substantial amount of travel in order to assist with international and domestic medical planning and risk assessments, provisioning medical care, and oversight of other Event Medical staff to ensure the safety and well-being of the league's athletes, senior leadership, Board of Governors, employees, staff, and fans worldwide.
Major Responsibilties:
- Support Event Medical Operations: Provide medical and logistical support across all 5 leagues, ensuring the highest standards of medical care and safety for athletes, employees, and fans.
- Assist with Managing Physicians and Event Medical Staff: Help to direct a team of event medical professionals, including 20 event medical physicians.
- Attend at least six NBA events as Event Medical staff to oversee operations and provide oversight of patient care. This responsibility involves substantial travel throughout the year.
- Provide clinical advice and logistical support in-person or remotely to Event Medical staff on-site at events.
- Link on-site staff with NBA League Office staff to coordinate insurance, HR support, and other workers’ compensation support when applicable.
- Assist with the coordination of medical evacuation and/or air ambulance services, when needed.
- Event Medical Coordination: Assist with the logistical coordination of staff and provide medical coverage for selected NBA, WNBA, G League, and BAL events, ensuring that all necessary medical expertise and resources are in place.
- Event Planning and Execution: Support or lead the medical planning, organization, and EMS coverage for selected league events, including direct sideline medical care at high-profile events such as the G League Showcase, G League Elite Camp, Basketball Without Borders, FIBA Intercontinental Cup, and NBA and BAL Combine.
- Update and Implement Event Medical Protocols: Provide medical expertise to assist with updating and implementing protocols for numerous league events per year, ensuring a consistent and high standard of care.
- Emergency and Concierge Medical Staffing: Organize emergency and concierge medical staffing for league event staff and guests, maintaining appropriate records in compliance with government regulations.
- On-Site Care and Global Coordination: Assist with development and communication of best practices for on-site care of acute medical incidents, including global insurance and payment requirements, and coordination of off-site medical care with local first responders, medical facilities, medical staff, public safety officers, and event administrators.
- Global Medical Partnerships: Create working relationships with hospitals worldwide to assist with event or business travel needs, including insurance and payment arrangements. Liaise with local Ministries of Health and State Department personnel to understand local medical laws and regulations.
- Review and Enforce Medical Policies: Review and enforce medical policies of applicable governing bodies and localities to ensure compliance and optimal care at all league events.
- Pre-Participation Medical Screening: Manage the pre-participation medical screening program for NBA Summer League players, ensuring all athletes meet necessary health standards before participating.
- Manage Medical Practitioner Talent Pool: Assist with obtaining and overseeing a talent pool of medical practitioners, including hiring, approval of paperwork, and managing expenses.
- Monitor Global Health Issues: Stay informed on global health issues, providing recommendations for business and event travel, including necessary vaccinations and pandemic protocols.
- Education: Provide pre-travel briefings to educate staff, vendors and teams on medical risks and best practices at both domestic and international events.
- Provide Concierge Medical Care: Organize and manage domestic and international medical care, ensuring a high standard of service and care for league-related events and personnel.
- League Support: Support medical operations for league activities, including medical oversight of review and approval process for specialized equipment and apparel for NBA player use, G League and BAL pre-participation physical reviews, BAL medical services, and NBA Academy physicals, ensuring all health standards are met.
- Collaborate with NBA Team Physicians: Work collaboratively with team physicians at major events, including the All-Star game, Las Vegas Summer League, NBA Global Games, and international basketball events, ensuring seamless medical operations.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with various departments including Player Health, Basketball Operations (including Referee Operations, Events, Legal, Marketing, Social Responsibility and Player Programs, Risk Management, Facilities, HR, and Corporate Services to ensure integrated and effective medical operations.
This role is central to maintaining the health and safety of everyone involved with the league, requiring a proactive and strategic approach to medical operations on a global scale.
Required Education/Professional Experience:
- 5 or more years of related event medicine and/or sports medicine experience required. Prior experience with major/professional sporting events, teams or leagues preferred.
- Current board certification or equivalent in a medical specialty. Candidates with certifications in emergency medicine and/or sports medicine preferred.

Salary Range: $300,000 - $325,000
